A Thank You, NaNoWriMo Days 17-18, and Train Rides

Cyndi and Her Wakefield Doctrine T-Shirt
Sporting my new shirt. I think when someone asks about the Doctrine, I’ll just say, “Clark”

I normally post twice per day, but yesterday was a no-go for me.  The train was roving at full-steam ahead and suddenly my brain went, “Girl, I need a break.  I don’t care what kind of break. Just stop staring at the screen.”

So, I went and interviewed a friend for Small Business Saturday, to help encourage people to shop locally on November 24th.

What a great time that was!  My good friend owns a business and we talked about the challenges and triumphs of owning and running your own operation.  Though I’m a writer/photographer (and I keep getting reports that a philosopher, too – go figure), I’m launching a business, as well, though it looks different from the brick and mortar style of a traditional store.  It’s “virtual” and cyber-like.

Then I started thinking about business tactics.  I wanted to give my friend some good PR, and on the advice of another friend – Terrye – I am submitting the “story” to area newspapers.  Who knows if they’ll feature it, but the little frame shop has a story all unto itself.

Another great tactic?  T-shirts.  In the world of business, there are all sorts of clever ways of promotion.  To that end, I must say thank you to my blogger friend Clark of the Wakefield Doctrine.  That’s me wearing his t-shirt up there.  I got it yesterday in the mail and I’m thrilled to have won it.  I reckon it’s my very clark-like personality that compelled me to give the answer he was looking for, to a question he posed on his blog.  Yippee!  I always love a free t-shirt.  So, my hat’s off to you, Clark.  You have one loyal follower.

Though I didn’t post here yesterday, I can tell you that I have been proceeding with my story for NaNoWriMo.  I have 42,010 words.  Just 8,000 shy until the actual contest is done.  I won’t be nearly finished with the story, but I will have reached that monumental goal.

I continue to be torn about what to do with this story.  I’m nervous that it’s flat.  Where my characters are supposed to pop and be robust, I’m afraid they’re lifeless and squished.  I know, I know.  That’s what edits-of-the-first-drafts are for.  But, it bugs the hell out of me that after all this writing, I still want to turn this college student’s life into some sort of surreal Dali-like-painting of a dream taking place in an alternate reality where magic spells are used to propel her to the seventh dimension – whatever that may be.

The debate rages on inside my head, but know this: I can write a novel.  What I ultimately end up doing with it, well, that could be interesting….or not.

  1. CC, for as long as I have known you, everything you have tried your hand at has turned into something extraordinary and amazing. Like that sharpie table…holy crap, girl! 🙂

And if the paper doesn’t run your story, there’s always a hub, right? 🙂 I love watching your projects come alive.

    You. Are. Amazing.

    1. Terrye – that’s one of the kindest things ever. LOL…I’m going to work my ass off to get this blog off the ground and people like you make it so worth it for me. You have gained a special place in my heart, my friend. You really have helped me to see beyond my own insecurities and turn those sentiments into thoughts of strength. I promise you, I will never, ever, ever forget that. ❤

  3. Isn’t it cool to think that we actually CAN write novels? Okay, so I haven’t reread any of my writing yet (dreading the first edit part…), but really – I didn’t think I’d ever be able to write a full novel…and definitely not in 30 days!!! I think we can truly sit back and relax over Christmas (oh, that’s if the world doesn’t end…Richard’s blog has me pondering things now..!) for a manic last few months, and toast to our success! You’re doing great! Years from now, just imagine going through the notes from your first novel…wow, what an experience! 🙂 So glad I was able to share this unique experience with you….it’s been a crazy ride, and about to get crazier! Hold tight girl….12 more days to go!

    1. Melanie – you’re rocking it, chica! You’re over the 50,000 mark, well on your way to 80,000. I wonder why 80,000? Hehe. That could be a goal for me in the future. I definitely won’t be finished when I get to 50,000 words, but I’m a couple days away from that goal. I will be toasting to this success for sure!!

  4. You are yet another blogger that I am amazed by all that you have and continue to accomplish…I am barely maintaining my 3x per week blog posting, working on my book, and keeping up with my writing class, which seems ridiculous compared to what you do during the day. I am fortunate to be surrounded by such inspiration…And, I agree with you on the t-shirts too (I too was a lucky winner!).

    1. Emily, lol, if it’s any consolation, I have no life and I’m chained to my computer. Hehe. It’ll be a special challenge now that I’m going across the country to go see family for a few days, too. Oh boy! 🙂 I’m glad you won a t-shirt, too! Have a wonderful Monday and happy Thanksgiving (a little early).

  5. Love the shirt! You beat me to it…I won one too but haven’t had a chance to post about it yet.
And I know what you mean about needing a day off. I took one yesterday too. I think we just push ourselves as much as possible. I push until I drop and then I whine about it. I hope you are feeling refreshed and ready to get back to work! You know you want to. 🙂

  6. Repeat after me…just write what you like. Write what excites you. That’s what I’m doing. Of course I worry that people will say, “It’s been done before” or “It’s too cliche” but I’m ignoring it. I want to read my book. Other than that, what can I do right?

    1. Julie – now, see, that’s a little hard to go by cuz like…well…is it possible to always be energized by what you’re writing? Hehe. I think I want to read my book. But I feel like it’s something I’ve been pouring so much time into…I might just be a teeny, tiny bit sick of it. HAHA.

  7. …most excellent photo! Given what I know about clarks’ attitude towards photos, your photo knocks me out.
Our personality type do have a serious strain of the air-bender gene, non?

Your efforts (and account) of that NaNoWriMo Challenge has been totally encouraging to me. Not that I am anywhere close to getting involved in anything on that level of skills, but there is something about how you are relating your experience that makes the idea of accomplishing a goal a thing that I find myself able to relate to, if that makes any sense.
Will be following the adventure through to the very end.

    1. Clark – why thank you! 🙂 Yeah, I’m getting a teeny-tiny bit more comfortable in front of the camera, but it’s still a precarious bet at best. Thank you so much for the cool t-shirt. I love it! It sounds so official: The Wakefield Doctrine. It sounds like an important secretive government agency.

  8. Awesome job.. you are so close to hitting that goal. I can’t wait to see where your story unfolds. Mine is almost done. I am hitting that climatic moment as we speak and then it all rolls downhill. I am nervous and excited all at the same time! Keep up the good work!
