Change Your Thinking and Change Your Life – Wordless (Wordy) Wednesday

Years ago, as I sat in my high school Physics class, the teacher was talking about atoms and subatomic particles.  And without getting into the complicated theories of science, it all comes down to this: matter is energy.

All life is made of matter and energy and at the tiniest of levels, waves.

Thus, one could argue that thoughts that emanate from the human mind are waves.  They come from our brain matter, which is a powerhouse of energy.

Thus, if you’re a positive thinker, you generate positive waves and negative thinkers do the opposite.

If you don’t believe me, think about a group of people in a workroom at their place of employment.  Two people are talking and they’re having a good conversation about the events of their weekend and they’re pretty happy.

In comes Mr. Crotchety.  The first two people ask him how his weekend was and he starts to complain: it rained all weekend, he didn’t have time to get everything done, and his wife was nagging him.  Suddenly the first two people aren’t as happy anymore.

They’ve picked up on the negative energy from the first person.  Then, all three of them might start commiserating about their drab and dull worklife.

That story up there is a version of a true story that happened over and over at a place where I used to work.

I’d walk away feeling so disgusting that eventually, if I didn’t actively avoid the negative-Nellys, I would be dragged down with them.

While their complaints may have been valid, focusing on them only made everything worse.  It was that negative energy manifesting and growing within their minds.

But, Isn’t Positive Thinking Just Hype?

Consider some of these quotes that I found around the web:

Thoughts have power; thoughts are energy. And you can make your world or break it by your own thinking.

–Susan Taylor

Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are.

— James Allen

If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.

— Peace Pilgrim

In the examples I used at the beginning of this post, I wanted to illustrate the fact that the people with whom you choose to surround yourself AND the thoughts which you entertain tend to reflect your innermost attitudes and thoughts.

It’s the idea of the Law of  Attraction.

Everything you are experiencing now you have actually drawn to you. Accepting this is the beginning to generating a life of health, bliss and abundance. Especially, since you now know you can choose your thoughts and therefore create a reality you really want to live in.

–Leona Janice Graham

Thus, if you’re unhappy, think about the company you might be keeping or the thoughts that fill your head.

Those times in my life where I’ve let negative thoughts take over were the times when I was most distressed and unhappy.  The times when I  let self-doubt, guilt, feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem and low self-confidence occupy my thoughts is when I noticed that others around me tended to reflect those same vibes.

A few months ago, I made a resolution to not entertain those thoughts.  I have worked and worked to not give them space in my head.

And it’s changed my life.

I’m not a magically happy person.  I’m someone who makes a choice to be happy.  And no, I don’t have rose-colored glasses on; they’re clear.  I’m just as prone to complaining about things as the next person: not enough money, not enough time, not enough this or not enough that.

How Can You Choose To Be Happy?

It’s not hard, but it takes practice and patience.

I’ve talked about having gratitude.  You need that.

I’ve talked about giving to others – in time, money, things you make, or with things you do.  You need that, too.

I’ve talked about mantras.  Say that which you aspire to be – ten, twenty, or even two hundred times a day.

Replace negative thoughts with positives.  Even when you don’t want to. Make yourself do it.

And With That, Have a Wonderful Wednesday – Join the Blog Hop!

wordless wednesday pictimilitude button

There are no rules.  BUT – next week we’re going to be changing things up a bit around here.

First, I’m going to start calling this blog hop Wonderful Wednesday because “wordless” is pointless, don’t you think?

AND, I think it would be fun to start creating a theme for each week.

AND, not to add rules, but there’s a lot of “link and runs” that I get on Wednesdays.  It’s great that people are coming by, but it’s just to link, without leaving any comments or interaction.

I like interaction.

I really do.

So, next week, I’m thinking we’ll have

Wonderful Wednesday,

with it’s own button and theme.

Since it’s spring in the northern hemisphere, the flowers are in full bloom, a flower theme would be fun.  Then, we could link up blogs that went with the theme.  Get your cameras ready!

For those of you in the southern hemisphere, you could also find flowers: chrysanthemums and many other varieties are in bloom.  So be sure to come back next week for a fun blog hop!

And, if you haven’t entered the giveaway for my “Desert Oasis” artwork, click here to enter.  🙂

  1. I grew up with my mom, who was a positive person by nature. She constantly would remind me that the glass is half full not empty and to try to smile as much as possible, because life was too short to frown and be unhappy. I have to tell you I think that is why to this day I am a generally happy person who tries not to let too much get to me and gets over things rather quickly, too.

Truly loved this post and as you can tell could very much relate. Will be back in the AM to linkup when my post goes live. I fear I might not be able to linkup next week, because I usually use flashback photos of my kids for Wednesdays, but please do keep me posted if you change your mind for next week.

And yes, you emanate positive vibes – this is one of the reasons I love you and your blog. 🙂

  3. This is how I choose to live my life, and I can honestly say it makes life so much more enjoyable. Giving people the benefit of the doubt, and assuming people are always coming from a positive and supportive space is what makes the mundane tasks of day-to-day life so much more enjoyable.

I work with people who are always negative, and I suspect it has to be exhausting. I can’t imagine how much energy it must take to hate on others, gossip, and just be all around negative. It has to take its toll on you, and I can’t imagine how tired they must be at the end of the day.

Life is too short not to enjoy every moment and see things in a positive light. This was a really enjoyable post. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  4. Oh yay, what fun! Wonderful Wednesday sounds like a brilliant idea 🙂 I have to tell you, I am feeling all sorts of good and positive today. Went to the gym at 5.45 and was home just after 7. I’m feeling fantastic! Ready to take on the world again, hehehe. I agree 100% with all you’ve said here. In fact, I wrote about this in my book as well 🙂 I also used to get sucked into negative talk at work, and with family. You wouldn’t recognise the person I was 10 years ago. I like who I am today, and I like who I choose to associate myself with. Some days aren’t perfect, but you’re right – it’s a choice to be happy. And I make it every day. LOVE, love, love this!!! Happy Wednesday friend 😉

    1. Melanie – ya know, we all have our days and moments when we’re less than positive. It’s the “getting back up and trying again,” that’s important and I think you emulate that. I love your zest for life and your approach to everything. You’re like a sister. 😉

  5. Wonderful Wednesday sounds like such a great idea Cyndi. I have found it hard to be wordless, and very much look forward to being wonderful instead! 🙂

I totally, totally agree with you that changing your thinking changes your life.

However, I’m going to stick my neck out here and say that although I tried for years to make myself think positive thoughts, it didn’t work for me. I have a sister who a few years ago tried to stop her negative thoughts – she’s currently deep in paranoid psychosis. The sad truth is that while you are absolutely right that we attract what we give out, there’s a lot of research that now indicates simply trying to make yourself more positive doesn’t always work – those with low self-esteem often feel worse after reciting affirmations, not better. (But they work beautifully if your esteem is high to begin with.)

What I’ve found works for me is to start by allowing the negative, to love it, have compassion for it (and that includes self-compassion.) When I allow how I’m feeling in any given moment I am more able to choose to be loving with myself and this makes it easier to be more compassionate with others without being dragged down. (Though sometimes I do still need time out for a while.) I also look for what I can learn from others who I perceive as negative. I don’t mean that I learn to be negative, but what they are telling me about myself! For example, a few days ago, I walked around the supermarket and noticed how many people were frowning – but I also noticed how I was subtly judging them. Then, as I stood in an aisle trying to work out where the organic dates had disappeared to, I realised I was probably frowning too – yet I was almost blissfully happy at that point. It jolted me to realise that my assumptions affected how I perceived the people around me. I’ve seen this over and over. One of my kids used to have a teacher we didn’t much like – she shouted quite a lot and I judged her for it – but I noticed that whenever I interacted with her, I held back in a way that I didn’t with those teachers I liked. Perhaps if I’d been more compassionate towards her, she would have felt more valued and so been kinder to the kids, who knows?

    1. Yvonne – I love it that you stuck your neck out. 🙂 A new perspective is always good. I do think that there are some people out there, as in the case you stated, where “normal operating procedures” are not going to work.
In that case I’m all for advocating “whatever works for you and gets you through life in the best way possible” approach. Indeed, what works for one may not work for another – I think of medicine that way. A remedy that cures someone of some illness might not work at all for another.
That said, I will never, ever claim to be positive and happy all the time. It’s just not possible. I DO allow the negative to run through my head sometimes. And then, and THEN, I tell myself that once I’ve had my nego-party (as I call them), I’m not allowed to entertain those thoughts for the rest of the day. It takes sheer, utter willpower sometimes, because sometimes you just have a really crappy day and a good cry and nap often work for me…maybe coupled with a good walk. 🙂
In any case, I love what you have to say and yes, keep it real.

  7. I love everything about this post, Cyndi. I have a friend who is big on the Law of Attraction. The way she explains everything around us being energy just makes sense. I’ve been in those depressing offices. I never lasted long in those places!

I also love the idea of a themed WW. I had a friend who did something similar. It was fun to have a prompt the week before. Got the creative juices flowing! Hoping some of my flowers will start blooming this week. We certainly have enough rain!

    1. Jennifer – yes, this is one of the biggest reasons I quit teaching (at least in public school) – the pressures of daily work were too much for most people. I felt like I was working in a pit of negative despair and this went on for five years! I couldn’t take it anymore. Not only that, those same people are STILL there. They won’t change. It’s amazing to me how many people will complain – bitterly – about the awfulness of their lives and yet won’t do anything about it. I didn’t want that for myself. Yowza.
And the themed Wednesday – yes! I want to spruce things up a bit around here AND Wordless Wednesday stuff will still apply. 🙂 Flower theme – yes!

  9. When I was working people would happen into my office, or I’d happen into theirs, and if a group of people starting gossiping or asked me a question about someone that had negative connotations, I would cover my ears and say, ‘lalalala.’ They ridiculed me, or called me Pollyanna, but they ended up laughing and talking happy. And that’s fine by me.

    1. Rosey – omg, I’m going to have to adopt that policy! “lalalala” – I LOVE it! And hey, Pollyanna is a compliment! That means people view you as someone to lift them up rather than bring them down.

  10. So true Cyndi! Negative people just suck the life out of the room. I get so tired of hearing people complain about problems they create their own selves and then they point the finger of blame when things go wrong. Ugh.

I made a rule for myself she folks start talking negative, I don’t smile, I don’t add to the conversation and I try to leave immediately:) lol

  11. My husband and I were just talking about the Law of Attraction not long ago. Generally speaking, he’s the more positive person and I’m the more negative person. His glass is always half full and mine… well it would be half empty but it’s usually less than that because the kids get hold of it before I even get a sip. See what I mean? 😉

I try every day to think more positive thoughts, and I believe that it helps. It’s a constant struggle though, and that’s frustrating, because you would think that positivity would come more easily than it does. Or maybe I’m just being negative about it. 😛

On a side note, I like the idea of Wonderful Wednesday with a theme, but I probably won’t participate as much, because I’m not so good with sticking to a theme. I’ll still be reading, though!

    1. Heather – you should still participate. 🙂 Maybe I won’t have a theme – I’m still working it out, but everyone can participate in a Wonderful Wednesday blog hop. 🙂 Mostly I’m renaming so that it doesn’t clash with “wordless” haha.
As for the Law of Attraction – yes. I’m coming to believe in that more and more. 🙂

  12. I’m not linking up today, (because I’m lame and have no post!), but I love your theme idea and I already have a photo planned for next week! I also loved your thoughts today…I constantly tell my kids that happiness is a choice and I try to teach them how to be positive thinkers, especially when things don’t seem to be going their way. I had a very negative person come up to me a few days before my mom passed and she said to me, “your mom is NOT getting out of the hospital.” Yes, I know a very screwed up thing to say someone…my friend who is a psychologist told me that people like her are “emotionally limited.” Although I was (and am) a bit haunted by that woman and thought that she somehow transferred her toxic, evil karma over to me, I have moved beyond thinking about what she said and am choosing to surround myself with happy, supportive people. I will make it a point to keep that woman out of my life as best as possible. Anyway, sorry to vent here but great post!

    1. Emily – haha, I can’t wait to see your photo next week. 🙂 As for what that woman said, I think it’s more a reflection of her own pain and reality. It just sucks when other people impose stuff like that on you. : Emotionally limited…that makes sense. It sounds like you dealt with it in a very healthy way: by surrounding yourself with loving, supportive people. 🙂 Thank you so much for your feedback.

  16. Cyndi, you hit the nail on its Wednesday head.. Our thoughts are indeed so important in our creating either positive or negative energy…
Many do not see that we are indeed Energy beings.. Who osculate within mattter.. Our very makeup is molecular.. We hold within our being a wonderful tool so powerful… But we have forgotten how to use it.. For we have been dumbed down for so long as we have been swept away within our ways of living.. We have long forgotten those ancient ways.. Understanding that we Manifest our own reality to us..
    We Create what we THINK!..
Our thinking bringing either positive or negative experience our ways…
We each need to learn that Change begins within each and everyone of us…
Great Post!… 🙂 with much gratitude for sharing..
