Gifts for Writers

It’s that time of year when it’s easy to focus on being thankful and grateful for the people/things/insert-whatever-here in our lives.

And to be sure, I am. It’s been a wonderful holiday season and I can’t take it for granted. Life can be so fleeting. Which lends itself to me being even more thankful.

You may know that now that I’m finished with school, I have more time to focus on stuff outside of the day job. Naturally this includes writing.

[Tweet “You know what I’m thankful for? Gifts conducive to good writing.”]

1. A supportive family.

Hubby’s family and my family support my desire to write. They know I love to learn, that I’m curious, and that I walk around tripping over things because my nose is in a book. Or I have to put eyedrops in my eyes to ward off eyestrain because I do get a lot of screen time on account of my writing and networking habits. That is a gift.

2. A supportive network of friends.

Since November of 2011 I have engaged in serious online writing. It’s looked different at different times: sometimes I focused on HubPages. Sometimes I focused here. Sometimes I focused elsewhere or didn’t even do online writing but journaled offline. Through it all, I have met incredible people from all over the world. Who follow your blog. That is a gift.

3. A warm fuzzy robe.

If you know me at all, then  you know I’m perpetually cold. Gifts that allow me to write in comfort are infinitely appreciated. So, my mom sent me a robe. To sit in comfort and write in. You have no idea how warm and soft the thing is. And it makes for warm writing bliss.

Fingerless for typing.

4. Heated mittens that connect to the computer.

Oh yes, you read that right. Many people’s hands get cold when they type at the computer. My fingers turn into blue sausages that get stiff like they have rigor mortis. So, I have these gloves that plug into the USB port of my computer and heat my hands up. They’re fingerless for typing, but can cover them to make them into outdoor mittens. I could totally be the poster child for heated gloves.

5. A space heater.

Not only do the fingers get cold, but when you sit in a chair for long periods of time, let’s face it. Those little toed-tootsies get cold, too. Not to mention the fact that I have to sit in a cold part of the house to do my business. It’s just the way it worked out, in terms of the layout of the house. To offset the cold, hubby got me a space heater for Christmas. It’s my new best friend. My other one died. Yes, died. It caught fire inside itself and burned to death. It was really sad. But now I’m glad. I have a new best friend. Don’t turn those things on and leave them unattended, folks!

6. Lots of tea.

People all over must know that A) I’m not a coffee drinker and B) That I’m perpetually cold. Because other teachers at school, hubby, and Secret Santa pals all brought me tea. It’s incredibly warming and yummy!

7. Electric kettle.

I’ve talked about these before. But electric kettles heat your water up in 90 seconds or less. Except mine is about five years old and it’s starting to die. Perhaps I could solicit an electric kettle company to sponsor me by sending one and I’ll write rave reviews on how they allowed me to change the world – by writing – because their kettles kept me nice and warm. In fact, I should write to all these companies. They have no idea how many writers are out there that want these things. Ha!

8. Moccasin Slippers.

My mom is a veritable lifesaver. Not only did she send me a robe, but she sent me some slippers that I will use forever and ever. Amen. This is another way I can stay warm as I write. The fur lining envelops my feet like a parka. My feet must stay at a comfortable 97 degrees. Just the way I like them.

9. Hershey’s Kisses with Almonds.

I came across this article that mentioned how people from other countries think milk chocolate in the US tastes like it has sour cream, or has otherwise gone bad. I make no apologies for my love of milk chocolate. Of course, it’s all in moderation. I don’t eat bags of it or anything. Three or four a day. You know, for brain fuel.

10. Pure Focus.

That’s the name of an mp3 track that I listen to daily as I write from BrainSync.com. It’s 60 minutes of scientifically engineered music. When I put it that way, it sounds horrible, doesn’t it? No, really, it’s actually really wonderful. It’s meditative music that includes binaural beats and gamma waves that improve concentration. Holy moly it makes a difference! On days I don’t listen, in an hour, I might do 1,000 – 1,500 words. When I do listen, I’ve topped 2,000 words in an hour. You can almost feel your brain going giddy with concentration energy.

For all these things I am thankful. These are things that I use daily for my writing addictions. And I’m so incredibly grateful that life is a little sweeter because of all of them. See? It doesn’t take much to make this girl happy.

Ten things of thankful

  1. Ok I need a pair of those gloves, because I am always cold even when I am typing. And I totally have furry moccasins but they are black not green. Great things to totally be thankful for as a writer indeed though 😉

    1. Haha, Janine. Life is amaaaaazing with these new handy gloves. I actually got them a couple months ago and I take them to work with me when I’m working on the computer there. I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful they are. 😀
Thanks for stopping by! I hope your Christmas was merry! And Happy New Year!

  2. A fine list, Lil Sis! It would take me too long to write my list. Every single day is a gift and has been for the last eight years. Happy New Year my friend. May we share many more!

    1. Big Bro, I’m so proud that you have had the gift that you have for the past eight years. I have too many friends and family that have not had that and I want that so badly for them. You’re a reminder to me that the sky’s the limit once you put your mind to it. I’m thankful for you and our friendship. Happy New Year to you, too, and to many, MANY more! HUGS!

  3. (I have one of those heaters at work… people got tired and/or embarrassed that I would work at my desk in my outdoor/winter coat, so they got me a heater*)
I totally need to get some of those gloves! Bob Cratchit in the 21st Century!

I try using ear buds (also at work) but unfortunately the combination of my musical tastes and state-of-hearing is such that people will walk by and say, “Good Morning, Clark… Jimi”

*odd effect, while it feels good and all to be warm, my shoes get like a Jiffy Pop popcorn thing after have the heat on too high/too long… lol

    1. Those heaters are awesome, aren’t they? Hehe, I can TOTALLY relate to the wearing of the jacket routine. I definitely do that. Then I look like I could receive satellite signals. Sometimes I’m connected via headphones, the mittens, and even my phone will be charging. I’m a veritable electric mess! lol
As for the Jiffy popcorn thing…well…I’m trying to imagine that feeling. Like tingles? I get tingles when it’s been too high for too long. LOL

  4. I’m very happy that you have such a supportive family Cynthia. And supportive friends. Writing is often thought of as an “indugence” or “hobby”. The unspoken opinion of some who don’t write, is “frivolous”. Sad.
Now about those gloves! I have often worn my own fingerless gloves while typing. Usually, at work but heated ones? That plug into your USB port?! Genius! I’m also one of the many who get cold very easily and you are absolutely in good company when you receive a robe that turns into “the” robe. The go to garment when the body temp dips below the popularly accepted normal temp of 98.6 to say 98.5 lol. I’m seeing a warmth trend in today’s post of which I am in full support!
The music thing intrigues me. I’m with Kristi. Will check out the website. Anything designed to jumpstart the brain…:)
I don’t know if I mentioned it before. I love the new look. Very attractive, clean lines, easily navigated. And I love the animated, twinkling Pictimilitude:)

    1. Denise, those gloves are an essential item for ANYONE who gets remotely cold while working at a computer. 😀 And yes, *the* robe. Gotta give credit to my momma. 🙂 The music thing is wonderful, too.
Thanks for the feedback on the new layout. I was just having a little fun last week. 🙂 And you know me: I love sparkles and glitter. Hehe.

  5. I just might have to get me some of these goodies once we move to the Mainland, whenever that finally happens. But for now I guess I’m lucky to live in Hawaii. No need for mittens, but I do sometimes get sand between my toes.

I kinda like that, actually. 😉

And thank you for the Randy Travis reference! The world would be such a better place if there were more Randy Travis references out there 😀

    Aloha, Chris

    1. You’re gonna move back to the mainland? Whoa! Where?
Hawaii makes me think of Colorado. Of course they’re opposite places. But I worked at a ski area for a couple years. We were at the top of the world. A veritable frozen paradise. But, it’s hard to make a living in paradise. I don’t know what it is. I admire those that can and do. Dang it. 🙂
Haha…Randy Travis. I didn’t even realize I did that until you pointed it out. LOL.
In any case, keep on writin’ – you’re great at it, doncha know. 🙂

  6. This is my kind of list! I am always, always cold. All winter long. I have a great robe, and my husband gives me new slippers every once in a while. I wear them out quickly, since I never take them off when I’m home.
    The gloves are marvelous.
But it is even more marvelous that your family supports you in your chosen work.

    1. Christine – haha! I meet more writers who are perpetually cold. LOL
Aww. Yes, I’m VERY lucky my hubby and extended family don’t criticize me too much with my writing. Sometimes when hubby’s done the dishes seven nights in a row, he’ll get me to help out…hehe. He just rolls his eyes. Hehe. But I support him in what he wants to do, so we approach it as team Calhoun. 😀 We win some and lose some, but we always try to do the hive-five after a long day.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  7. You have no idea how much you’ve just made me crave winter right now! That’s an awesome list of thankful you’ve got there. I might just need to invest in a similar type of robe once the cold season hits us around May. It’s so good to read your writing again, I missed it! 🙂 xx

Haha, CRAVE winter? Oh man…I’m not a fan. Even when I’m melting in the summer. Given a choice, I’d rather be too warm (though being too hot makes a person wanna faint) than too cold where you feel like the cold cuts to the bones. LOL
Robes are awesome! Of COURSE I’m wearing mine right now as I type. *giggle*
So good to see you! xx

Yes…useful gifts. 😀 I’m VERY thankful. Those moccasin slippers you had sound beautiful and wonderful. I’m the same: once I have something like that I like, I’ll wear it until…it gets a little dangerous. haha.
That BrainSync site is so *wonderful* – I have LOTS of downloads and music from there. 🙂
I am also sending you wishes for a wonderful New Year! Love and blessings to you and big hugs!

  9. Those gloves are astonishing! Your list was like a foreign land to me. All my life my body’s thermostat has been set too high. I am perpetually hot. People use ME to warm up. So, if the new stuff doesn’t work out, you can come sit by me while you type!

    1. May – haha, I get that. Every one of my in-laws are hot-natured. Me? Oh boy. I inherited the block of ice gene. 😛 I could never be an Eskimo: I’d freeze to death just by staring at the igloo. 😀
But, if you’re a heat generator, well, I might just have to really sit next to you while I type! Haha.

  10. I want all the things! These are truly great gifts for a writer – or not! And having family support a life choice like that? I know firsthand right now how very valuable that is indeed.
Happy New Year and happy cozy writing to you!

  11. I find the idea of the music FASCINATING. Do you think it’s genuinely down to the music, or to the surrounding variables which come into play when you consciously choose to listen to the music?

Those gifts are all AWESOME though, and YAY you’re BACK!

  12. 1. That’s so important! My husband supports me, my kids waffle.
    3. I cover up with a fuzzy blanket when I’m writing and get cold. That immediately invites a cat to join me, whether I like it or not.
    4. Need. NEED!
    5. I use one when I take a shower. Our bathroom is big and cold. Helps take the edge off.
6-7. I don’t drink coffee. Diet Coke most of the time, but when it’s cold, I like tea. I am currently hooked on PG Tips (thanks to Piper and Lizzi) with a little Stevia and a splash of milk. We got an electric kettle last year for Christmas and love it. My husband is a tea drinker, too, so we use it often. For Christmas this year, I got ANOTHER electric kettle, this to keep upstairs in my bathroom (it’s a really big room). We already have a little fridge in there; a microwave, too, and I’d never have to leave my bedroom!
    8. Cute! Love the color!
    9. Hershey kisses are so simple and delicious! Like them plain and with almonds, but otherwise am a kiss purist!
